Macarena Díaz Ubilla​

Hola a todos!

Mi nombre es Macarena Díaz, chilena, Bioquímico de la Universidad de Chile, actual estudiante de doctorado y miembro de una familia de FSHD.

Cuando no estoy en el laboratorio trabajando, probablemente me encontrarás en casa pintando, en el cine, comiendo cosas ricas con mis amigos o haciendo trekking en alguno de los muchos paisajes hermosos mi país. 

Para mí ha sido increíble poder participar en la coordinación y toma de muestra de este test de investigación, ya que me permitió conocer y conectar con muchos pacientes con FSHD en Chile. Dado que los habitantes de Sudamérica somos una población mestiza (y poco estudiada), es muy importante para nosotros poder participar y ser incluidos en análisis como el que nos ha ofrecido el Dr. Jones.

Contar con la información genética y epigenética es tener ambas piezas de un rompecabezas muy difícil de descifrar, pero mientras más información diversa recolectemos, más pronto podremos comprender la complejidad de la FSHD. 

Si tienes alguna pregunta, ¡no dudes en contactarme! Ya seas de Chile o de cualquier país de habla hispana, la FSHD es un tema que me apasiona (mucho). Ser una embajadora de myFSHD es una tremenda oportunidad de poder utilizar mi profesión para ayudar a otros y eso me hace feliz! Te puedes sentir solo en esto, pero créeme que -no-lo-estás-, ¡muchas personas estamos trabajando por la causa!

Hello everyone!

My name is Macarena Díaz. I’m a Chilean Biochemist from the University of Chile, currently a PhD student, and a member of an FSHD-affected family.

When I’m not in the lab working, you’ll probably find me at home painting, at the cinema, enjoying any delicious meal with my friends, or trekking through some of the many beautiful landscapes in my country.

It’s been incredible for me to coordinate and collect samples for this epigenetic research test, as it has allowed me to meet and connect with many FSHD patients in Chile. As members of an admixed American population, it’s crucial for us to get involved and be included in genetic and epigenetic research like the one developed by Dr. Jones.

Having genetic and epigenetic information allows us to compliment different pieces of a very challenging puzzle, but the more information we collect (and the more diverse it is), the sooner we will understand the complexity of FSHD.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me! Whether you’re from Chile or any Spanish-speaking country, FSHD is a topic I’m really passionate about. Being an ambassador for MyFSHD means a huge opportunity for me to use my profession to help others, and that makes me happy!
